EventBox, Manage Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader and more with a Stunning Desktop Client for MacOSX
Today, thanks to @rutgerbom I just discovered a very cool desktop application for MacOSX which lets you manage many online web services all at once from a unique and very well designed interface.
I was initially looking for a Google Reader desktop app since applications like ReadAir are not that great (yet, at least) while others are for Windows only.
EventBox looks very promising, even if there are some minor issues to be ironed out (it’s a beta). To date, it lets you manage Twitter, Facebook, Google Reader, Reddit, Flickr and any RSS feed you’d like to add. Anyway, more services should be added soon, like MySpace, Tumblr, NewsGator, del.icio.us, Orkut, FriendFeed, Ping.fm, Last.fm, SoundCloud, Present.ly, Identi.ca, all of them requested by beta testers.
The user interface is really stunning and it fully takes advantage of the powerful Leopard’s CoreAnimation technology. Here are some screenshots:
For most services, you can interact directly through its user interface, like replying/posting to Twitter, posting photos to Facebook, updating your status and so on. Unfortunately you cannot share articles on Google Reader, while you can subscribe/unsubscribe to feeds instead.
You also have a “HUD” where you can receive realtime events from all or some of the services you are using from EventBox and through which you can perform the main functions made available by the services you are subscribed to. This can be useful even if you have to use this feature carefully since it can be a big source of distraction. If you have Growl installed, you can also link those notifications to it.
Many new features are going to be released soon and certainly the support by beta users is fundamental in this phase. The downside is that this service is not free. While I don’t disagree with this, I disagree on the fact they are asking for money for the beta version ($20 the full price, $15 for the beta, not a great discount). I would have asked for less, like $5, since the contribution by a single beta user is worth much more, IMHO.
Initially I was complaining about the huge draining of resources, but I have to say that maybe it was just a matter of the first usage, because I’m not experiencing the same problem anymore. I’ll keep you posted if anything gets worse from this viewpoint.
My recommendation? This app rocks and I highly encourage you to download it a give it a try. I bet the next versions will be even better with some services (like Friendfeed) becoming killer (positive…) for its success.
